Luminate, Scotland's Festival of Creative Ageing
Feed the Spirit
FRIDAY OCTOBER 31ST - THE LUMINATE FINALE AT MELVICH VILLAGE HALL
As part of the LUMINATE finale - The Portskerra International Storytelling Festival is proud to present James MacDonald Ried as the special guest of LUMINATE. LUMINATE Artistic Director, ANNE GALLACHER, has indicated that she is planning to spend the final night of this month long national festival of creativity in ageing with us for the LUMINATE International programme at Melvich Village Hall.
Feed the Spirit - participants:
Canadian Jock - Jock Sutherland, Mid-Clyth making his FAMOUS Fudge for the Opening Night, Thursday Oct 30th |
So each day of the festival there will be a recipe sharing and making programme, closely followed by the audiences sampling the endeavours - all supported by Luminate - Feed the Spirt and feed the body. And here are the people involved: Margaret Mackay - by Crask, Bettyhill making her Treacle Scones for Hallowe'en (maybe even an oatcake or two) for the Friday night. We'll surely have to try the treacle covered scones hanging on strings and see who can 'eat' them successfully. Might even 'bob' for apples… And the other two Feed the Spirit participants leading the recipe sharing and the making are:
Rosemary Cameron - Portskerra making Soup for Saturday night. The final community member is Carol Russell from Strath Halladale who'll be sharing her fabulous Fresh Cream filled Meringues for the Sunday Afternoon Cafe. All at Melvich Village Hall - evening programmes 7.70pm and the Sunday 2-4pm |
What it's all about...
Each evening of the festival those attending will get to share the food and the stories that have been passed along with making the family favourite for the day. ‘Feed the Spirit’ will bring three generations together to share favourite recipes and to tell the stories behind the food – baking or cooking. And to make and share the food that inspires them. Groups of three will basically consist of a 55+, an under 55 and an under 20 year old. The three could be a family grouping or a mix and match of individuals put together by Portskerra Annual International Storytelling Festival organiser Alexandria Patience.
October is a good time of the year for a food focus with the passing on of recipes and the stories behind them but now is a good time to be signing up to participate whether you are someone who has a favourite recipe that you are willing to share or are someone who has an interest in food and wants to learn new recipes.
Sharing information, skills, history social and family, and creating a bond for this group and for those who participate by watching and then attending the evening ‘storytelling festival event’ when the ‘Feed the Spirit’ event has a section of the programme. Each night we hear the recipe, the stories behind the recipe and of the day making the ‘food’ AND then we share the food. It's the equivalent of hearing someone 'tell a traditional story' as opposed to reading one in a book - the recipe gets passed on in the old school way.
